With killer bikes and cars zooming past at high speed, people are regularly falling prey to accidents, leading to a surge in numbers of injuries and deaths due to them. To put a curb on reckless speed, the Ahmedabad traffic police have begun installing speed radars at important junctions of the city.
These radars will measure the speed of vehicles and issue instant challans to the violator once he or she exceeds the stipulated speed limit. To begin with, a speed radar has been installed on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati Riverfront.
A traffic official said, “Sometimes on certain stretches, people indulge in stunts during night hours, and accidents occur due to overspeeding. Often deploying too many traffic policemen on ground becomes a constraint. The advantage of speed radar guns is that one can instantly issue e-challans.”
Several of the roads have been assigned speed limits in the city and that information is being fed to the AI software. “If say one exceeded the 40kmph limit or a 50kmph limit at night, the radar would automatically capture a picture of the vehicle and issue a challan. The challan will reach the violators automatically with the help of our data centre,” added the traffic official.
The speed guns will operate for three hours during peak hours in the morning and evening.
Sources said another advantage of the speed radar is that it generates a large dataset of overspeeding for a particular road stretch, which could be used for a correlation study to see whether the speed limit for certain roads need to be revised, or not based on the number of accident calls received by the police or ambulance services. Apart from the speed radars, several of the city’s CCTVs at junctions are being backed by powerful AI software that can detect speeds accurately and instantly for corrective action.
