Technology is transforming the way we interact, think and communicate. It’s also changing the technique of investigations by using images for examples.
In what is deemed as another breakthrough in technology, forensic science experts will use an image-based Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature (BEOS) system called BEOS Image Classifier (BIC) to assist investigations.
Gujarat will be proud that the Gujarat Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS) has become the first forensic science laboratory in India to get a BIC facility.
For the uninitiated, BEOS is frequently used to identify a new line of investigation. A senior DFS official explained to a national newspaper that the human brain stores information related to every incident a person experiences. The same cues can be used to record an activity.
DFS officials told the newspaper that BEOS analysis, used for many years, is a non-invasive tool to determine experiential knowledge about events under investigation.
“The system, while still in widespread use, works on auditory cues where facts are played back to the person being tested. If the person knows about what they hear, the brain activity indicates familiarity or vice versa,” HP Sanghvi, director of DFS Gujarat, was quoted as saying. “In the BIC, the cues include a series of pictures, both actual and controlled. When there is a language barrier, it can work well as the person does not need to understand the input language.”
He added the system was being used as a second method alongside BEOS to ascertain results. “So far, the results have been good. In both cases, there is no human intervention apart from providing cues. BEOS signature is recorded automatically and interpreted by experts,” Sanghvi said.
He added that some cues presented visually include crime associates, locations, weapons used or routes travelled. Images come in handy especially when weapons are used, names or identities of locations are unknown and a visual trace exists.
