The Gujarat Congress on Wednesday alleged the safety of women in the state was at stake.
Speaking to reporters in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesman Parthivrajsinh Kathavadia said, according to the central government data, over 7,000 minor girls had gone missing in the state between 2019 and 2021.
“The government coins slogans on the safety of women and girls, but the figures reveal they are not safe in the state,” Kathavadia said, citing the government that informed the Lok Sabha about 7,430 girls under 18 years missing in the state in the three-year period.
He also pointed out that there was a discrepancy in the rape figures in the state. “The Vidhan Sabha was informed on March 10 this year that 3,769 rape cases were registered in the state in the last two years. But in the Lok Sabha the Centre said only 2,633 cases of the crime were reported in the state in the last five years.”
He asked, “Why is the Centre under-reporting such cases in the state?”
It must be remembered that according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Gujarat has reported over 40,000 missing women over a span of five years.
In the NCRB data (2022), the total missing report amounts to 41,621 in Gujarat alone.
