When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he launched the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign to improve the status and safety of the girl child. Now, nine years down the line, the campaign has been reduced to an empty slogan. In 2015, PM Modi gave further impetus to his original campaign but in Gujarat, it remains just a cosmetic campaign.
According to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Abhiyan to curb gender discrimination has lost its mojo in Gujarat.
As per a Gujarat government rule, authorities are supposed to conduct an inspection every 90 days at every sonography clinic across the state to check and monitor whether sex determination tests are conducted. Sadly, the government authorities did these checkings only at 32 locations. They are supposed to conduct sting operations too, which they did not.
Citing confidentiality, the authorities said they had not been able to document the audio-video evidence of their sting operations.
State has 33 districts. Not a single district has an equal sex ratio. The lowest ratio is 868 (Sabarkantha) and the highest is 978 (Morbi). Similarly in other districts of Gujarat, the ratio is 877 (Amerli), 880 (Ahmedabad), 889 (Botad), 893 (Mehsana, Surat), 897 (Junagadh and Anand), 900 (Rajkot and Mahisagar), 907 (Bhavnagar, Gir-Somnath and Panchmahal), 916 (Gandhinagar), 919 (Bhuj), 920 (Dang), 921 (Vadodara), 927 (Valsad), 930 (Patan), 931 (Narmada), 934 (Navsari), 935 (Chhota Udaipur), 938 (Porbandar), 940 (Dahod), 943 (Aravali and Devbhoomi Dwarka), 945 (Tapi), 952 (Banaskantha), 957 (Kutch and Kheda) and 960 (Jamnagar).
