The Uttar Pradesh Commission for Minorities has sent a notice to a representative of the madrassa in response to the Darul Uloom Deoband prohibiting its students from enrolling in courses like English at other institutions while they are enrolled at this renowned Islamic school.
Commission Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Siddiqui made a statement in which he stated: “Through social media, information has come to the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Commission for Minorities that the students are not allowed to receive their education in any other medium (English). Taking suo-motu notice of the matter, the committee requests that the manager of the education department (naazim majlis taaleem) of the Darul Uloom Deoband appear before it on June 21 at 12 p.m. with your report.
The breach of any order or directive of the panel is a serious offence under several articles of the Indian Penal Code, the commission added in the statement it released on Thursday.
The Darul Uloom Deoband has stated that it has enforced the restriction because it interferes with the seminary’s ability to offer instruction when students enrol in outside coaching facilities. It has also made it clear that it has a separate English department.
English was specifically named in a recent order from the Darul Uloom Deoband education department, suggesting that it may be one of the most popular courses that students choose to take outside of the institution.
“Students are informed that no other course (English, etc.) will be allowed while pursuing education at the Darul Uloom Deoband,” the edict in Urdu stated. It said that the students would be dismissed if such behaviour was established by “reliable sources.”
The instruction forbade the students from staying in their dorms while classes were in session. It stated that the administration would inspect the rooms.
