Cyclone Biparjoy: Dwarka And Kutch at High Risk, Says IMD

| Updated: June 13, 2023 15:58

The Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat are predicted to be most affected by Cyclone “Biparjoy,” according to the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday.

On the evening of June 15, Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to cross the beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch close to Jakhau Port as a “very severe cyclonic storm” with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125–135 kmph and gusts to 150 kmph.

IMD director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that, “Its damaging potential could be extensive.”

On June 15, the storm may cause isolated locations in the Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts to see extremely high rainfall (above 20 cm).

“These regions typically don’t get as much rain. As a result, it can cause flooding in low-lying areas.” He stated

It may rain heavily or very heavily in Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, and Junagarh.

These areas are expected to be battered by winds with gusts of up to 145 km.

Low-lying coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch could be inundated by tides with a six-meter height limit. Authorities are moving quickly to implement the advised evacuation plans, according to Mohapatra.
