Just days after a tragic three-train accident in Balasore claimed the lives of 275 individuals, another incident occurred in Odisha’s Bargarh district. On Monday, a goods train derailed on a private narrow gauge rail line, raising concerns about railway safety in the region.
According to officials, the train, loaded with limestone, was en route from Dunguri to Bargarh when five of its bogies derailed. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or casualties stemming from the incident. The derailment occurred within a private siding, highlighting the distinction that this rail line is not under the management or operation of the national railway authorities.
“The private siding is owned by a company, and its maintenance and operations are independent of the railways. The private narrow gauge rail line connects Dungri Limestone Mines and the Cement Plant of ACC Bargarh. The line, wagons, and locomotive are all privately owned. It is entirely separate from the Indian Railway system,” explained the officials, clarifying the nature of the incident that took place in the early morning on this particular line.
While investigations are underway to determine the cause of the derailment, this incident once again raises concerns about the overall safety and maintenance standards of railway infrastructure, particularly on privately operated rail lines. Authorities will be closely examining the circumstances surrounding the accident in order to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
