In an inadvertent episode not related to calling out his bluff, a man’s tall claims of being an official from the chief minister’s office (CMO) was called out. This comes close on heels of Amdavadi Kiranbhai Patel’s recent hoodwinking an entire government system into availing VIP privileges faking as a high-ranking PMO official.
Vadodara police, on Saturday, booked the imposter masquerading as an official from the CMO and president of GIFT City, on charges of cheating and forgery. As the story goes, the accused, Viraj Patel, had gone for a movie with his woman friend at multiplex near Nilambar Crossroads on Gotri-Vasna Road late Friday night. However, there was an altercation between him and another man. The police were called in to resolve the fast-escalating tensions.
On arrival, the accused, claimed to be from the CMO. All three were taken to the Gotri police station. Patel further added that he was the president of GIFT City, Gandhinagar and that the woman with him was appointed as brand ambassador of GIFT City.
He also maintained that the woman was staying with him owing to threats “asking her to quit as brand ambassador of GIFT City.”
When asked to produce his identity papers by Gotri police sub-inspector Rahul Bariya, Patel showed his Aadhaar card which mentioned him as Viraj Ashwinbhai, a resident of Sargasan in Gandhinagar district. On the PAN card, however, his name was mentioned as Viraj Ashwinbhai Shah.
When questioned about the discrepancy, he admitted having furnished “incorrect details for the PAN card.”
At this point, the officer grew suspicious and informed senior officials regarding Patel. The senior officers double checked and reverted saying that he was a conman. An offence registered by Bariya on basis of the report sent by senior cops.
Meanwhile, having learnt of his fraud, the woman claimed being used and registered an offence of rape against Patel.
Elaborating on the case, Gotri police inspector M.K. Gurjar added that Patel promised to get the woman the job of a brand ambassador in GIFT City and also promised to marry her. “He had been with her for nearly 25 days now and was exploiting her,” added the official.
The accused has been detained and his arrested is pending the covid test.
