In a major effort to bring well-known Hollywood content to the platform, the broadcast arm of India’s Reliance has partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., according to two sources with first-hand knowledge.
The sources said that under the terms of the agreement, popular shows like Succession, Game of Thrones, and the upcoming Harry Potter series would be made available on Reliance’s JioCinema app, along with other content from Warner Bros. and its HBO division.
The sources withheld information about the deal’s financials. According to the first source, the collaboration will be exclusive and result in JioCinema providing the majority of Warner’s top-tier marquee content.
One of the sources claimed that Warner is unable to provide the majority of its well-known films to Amazon Prime Video and Disney Hotstar, two Indian competitors. JioCinema, which has gained popularity for broadcasting the IPL cricket tournament on the platform for free during the current season, could receive thousands of hours of streaming content as a result of the content deal.
“It’s a deep exclusive arrangement which will make JioCinema the house of Warner, HBO in India,” said the person.
Viacom18 bought the IPL digital streaming rights from 2023 to 2027 from Disney for about $2.9 billion.
