A mountaineer, Anurag Maloo who went missing on April 17 after falling into a crevasse while descending Mount Annapurna, has been found alive. However, his condition is critical and he is currently receiving treatment in Nepal, Kathmandu.
“He is found alive. He has been taken to the hospital in critical condition, but he is still alive,” Sudhir, his brother said.
The rescue team, which consisted of six sherpas and two foreigners, aided by Indian and Nepalese authorities, found Maloo in a dire state.
The rescue operation was risky due to avalanches occurring frequently in the area, according to Mingma Sherpa, chairman of the Seven Summit Treks, which also participated in the rescue efforts. Chhepal Sherpa, Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Dawa Nurbu Sherpa, Tashi Sherpa, Lakpa Sherpa, Lakpa Nurbu Sherpa, the Polish climber Adam Bielecki, and Mariusz Hatala were involved in the rescue operation. They were assisted by Sobit Gauchan, who manned a standby chopper.
A team of six Sherpa climbers led by Chhang Dawa conducted a ground search and found him in some 300m deep crevasse on Thursday morning, said Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks.
Anurag Maloo is on a mission to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres, as well as the seven highest summits on each of the seven continents. He received the REX Karam- Veer Chakra. Also, he became India’s 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador.
Anurag’s family and friends had also written a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, asking him to intervene for the climber’s safe return.
Earlier, another renowned Indian climber Baljeet Kaur had also gone missing on the same mountain but was traced by a rescue team. The 27-year-old climber had gone missing near camp IV on Mt Annapurna. She was rescued from a height of 7,363 metres and has suffered frostbite, officials said.
