E-commerce company Walmart will cut more than 2,000 positions across five e-commerce fulfilment centres in the country, according to regulatory filings, though impacted employees may find other roles at the company.
According to the report, Walmart intends to change its operations to better cater to online shoppers. Over 1,000 jobs are being cut in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as 600 in Pennsylvania, 400 in Florida, and around 200 in New Jersey. The retail behemoth is also planning another cut in California.
The regulatory filings provide more detail on the Walmart warehouse staffing cuts, which the company confirmed last month without quantifying. Walmart is also expanding in some areas as it adapts its stores and fulfilment centres to handle more online orders. This may allow the company to reshuffle some employees rather than lay them off.
As a result, the net impact on total employment at Walmart, the country’s largest private-sector employer, remains uncertain. Earlier, on March 23, Reuters reported that hundreds of workers at five Walmart facilities that fulfil e-commerce orders were being asked to find jobs within 90 days at other company locations.
The company has avoided the kind of mass layoffs being carried out by rival Amazon.com Inc., which announced last month that it would cut another 9,000 jobs on top of the 18,000 already cut.
In the face of economic uncertainty, other major technology companies, such as Google and Meta, have also opted for mass layoffs. Google announced 12,000 job cuts in January of this year, while Meta laid off 21,000 employees in two waves.
