They do a thankless and often unrewarding job. What would societies be without the police, our lifeline? And literally so as an elderly man who attempted suicide in the Tapi river in Surat may have realised.
His life was saved, thanks to the courage and sharp thinking of two police constables.
Locals soon dialled the police control when the man jumped into the Tapi river.
According to a tabloid, two constables from the Chowk Bazaar police station, on receiving a call from the locals at around 4:15 pm, rushed to the spot in just eight minutes.
It helped that there was a considerable amount of police presence in the area since Chatth puja is going to be held in the next few days.
One of them, constable Chintan Rajyaguru, took off his boots and jumped into the river. The other cop, Rahulbhai Bhurjibhai, in charge of PCR No. 30, threw a rope into the water. Together, they managed to rescue the man.
Shifted to a hospital, he was reportedly in stable condition.
Constable Rajyaguru told the tabloid, “Without a moment’s thought, I immediately decided to jump into the water. I knew how to swim and in 20 to 30 seconds I could save the old man in the water. We had a big rope in the PCR van. I asked my colleague to throw it in the water. As I reached the old man, constable Rahul threw the rope into the water. With the help of the rope, the people around, my fellow policemen and I could pull the man out.”
