Sources stated on Wednesday that a petition contesting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction and sentence in a defamation case by a trial court in Surat is prepared and is expected to be filed very soon.
The review petition will be submitted before the Surat sessions court in a day or two, according to the top legal advisors for the party who are now working on it. In the 2019 defamation case involving his comments on the Modi surname, Gandhi was found guilty and given a two-year term. As a result, he lost his position as a Lok Sabha MP.
The Congress has said that it will battle the issue on both a political and legal level, as well as by bringing it to the public’s attention.
Manickam Tagore, the whip for the Congress in the Lok Sabha, claimed that Rahul Gandhi had been purposefully disqualified by the government as part of a well-thought-out plot to prevent him from participating in Parliament during this budget session.
“This is a totally false case and his disqualification has come to keep him away from Parliament. But, we will fight it both legally and politically,” he told reporters outside Parliament.
