To give taxpayers more time, the government on Tuesday extended the deadline for linking Permeant Account Number (PAN) and Aadhaar by three months, to June 30, 2023, according to an official statement.
Before that, the deadline was March 31. People can inform the required authority of their Aadhaar for Aadhaar-PAN linking without repercussions, it added.
Every person who had been allotted a PAN as of July 1, 2017, and who is qualified to obtain an Aadhaar number, is required to inform the prescribed authority of his Aadhaar on or before March 31, 2023, in accordance with the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, upon payment of the prescribed fee.
“Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the Income Tax Act w.e.f. April 1, 2023. The date for intimating Aadhaar to the prescribed authority for the purpose of linking PAN and Aadhaar has now been extended to June 30, 2023,” it said.
The PAN of taxpayers who have neglected to provide their Aadhaar as required will no longer be valid as of July 1, 2023. More than 51 crore PANs are said to have already been connected to Aadhaar as of this writing.
