A special MP/MLA court in Prayagraj pronounced gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed guilty in the 2006 kidnapping of lawyer Umesh Pal. The Prayagraj court, in its verdict has convicted Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf and all the eight co-accused.
Pal, the main witness in the killing of Bahujan Samaj Party lawmaker Raju Pal, was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24. Ahmed is also the prime accused in the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal, who was later shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24.
Ahmed was brought to Prayagraj yesterday from Gujarat by a 45-member Uttar Pradesh Police team. He was taken to the Naini Central Jail and has been kept in a high-security barrack adjacent to the women’s jail.
After a 24-hour-long road journey, covering over 1,200 km and spanning four states with few halts, a five-vehicle convoy of UP Police comprising 20 security personnel brought former MP Atiq Ahmed to the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj from Gujarat on Monday evening.
Several vehicles, including those of family members of the former MP, also followed the convoy right from Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad in Gujarat. A battery of journalists also followed the police convoy giving live updates about the movement.
Ahmed, facing nearly 100 criminal cases has been at Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad since 2019 on directions of the Supreme Court after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of a businessman while in jail.
With Atiq Ahmed expressing apprehension about being killed in a fake encounter by the UP Police, his family members followed the police convoy all the way from Rajasthan.
