Over 2000 Amdavadis walked here on Sunday to promote the cause of organ donation creating awareness and a sense of responsibility. Kusum Dhirajlal (KD) Hospital organised it.
One organ donor can save upto eight lives and there is a huge gap between the need for organ donation and availability of organs in India. Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner M. Thennarasan said adding that he was delighted to be part of the organ donation awareness initiated by the city based K D Hospital.
Guest of Honour, and founder of Angdan Charitable Trust Dilip Deshmukh, said it was an honour to be a part of this Walkathon on Organ Donation Awareness. According to government statistics, more than 5 lakh people in India die yearly due to the non-availability of organs for transplantation. Let us all work together towards making organ donation a more accessible and prevalent practice,” he added.
Managing Director of KD Hospital, Dr Adit Desai said he was thrilled to see an impressive turnout for this Walkathon on Organ Donation Awareness. “India has one of the world’s lowest organ donation rates, with less than 1 donor per million population in contrast to developed countries. This discrepancy can be attributed to a lack of awareness, misconceptions, and cultural and religious beliefs. In the future, we intend to organize such events in various cities throughout the state frequently”, he added.
