Four attempted suicides in one month, one ending in death on Friday and Ahmedabad moves on, trying to silently reconcile to CTM Flyover turning into an end point for some. A 45-year-old woman jumped to death on Friday, two days after a young woman attempted to end her life and is currently in critical condition at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
The past 25 days saw two young women, aged 19 and 23, left with critical injuries after attempting suicide. In another instance earlier, a 12-year-old boy was rescued just before jumping by by-passers the flyover.
Mental health experts in the city, while attributing the trend to depression and personal strife, also blame “overexposure to horrific scenes portrayed in the media and videos and to CCTV grabs of tragedies floating on social media.”

According to the police, Sheetal Sonar, 45, a resident of Bapunagar police lines in the city jumped off the flyover in an alleged suicide bid at about 2.40 pm on Friday. She was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance where initial examination confirmed fractures to both hands, cervical bone and a breach on the skull bone. She was declared brought dead.
Doctors at the hospital, however, credit timely help rendered by pilot Akram Saiyyad and paramedic Komal Parmar on the ambulance in the previous cases. “Not only did they reach the spot bang on time, the paramedic took interim treatment advice from Dr Anjali, the Emergency Response Centre Physician (ERCP),” shared the resident medical team. Saiyyad and Pramar were instrumental in ferrying the previous two suicide survivors on February 6 and March 1 to LG Hospital on time.
“Nets and higher barricades will deter such attempts. There must be active seeking of help for those prone to end being the solution of all their woes,” shared police officials who visited the spot to inspect the scene of crime.
