Even as the reason behind the tragic end is yet to emerge, the family of 17-year-old Divyesh Ghoghari has not been able to reconcile with the fact that he is longer alive. The first-year student of LD College of Engineering (LDCE) died by suicide on Thursday afternoon by hanging himself in his hostel room. Exam-related stress is suspected to be the reason though murmurs also abound about a love affair gone wrong. According to Gujarat University police officials, the teenager was a native of Surat and was studying textile engineering at LDCE.
“Around 1.30 pm on Thursday, his roommate alerted us all about the suicide,” said a police officer at GU. An officer said that the cops did not find any suicide note on him or from his room. “He seems to have recently formatted his phone and deleted its content. We have to seek FSL’s help in retrieving the data,” added an investigating officer.
“Based on statements from his hostel mates, it seems that he was under stress because of the university exam, which could have led him to commit suicide. His friend told us that he did not even fill in the exam form as he had not prepared well for the exam,” added the cop. The officer said that the boy’s parents were informed about the suicide and his body was sent for post-mortem. Forensic officials examined the crime scene on Thursday.
The deceased comes from a modest background; his father works at a diamond trading unit and his mother is a homemaker, the cops said. Divyesh, was an occupant of room 238 on the third floor in Block B. He was a first-year student of Textiles Engineering.
“He had been on campus since the last eight months. We suspect that he was depressed ever since his girlfriend stopped talking to him. He woke up as usual and was with us all. It was only after I got back around 1: 30 pm and Divyesh did not respond to the knocking, that I sounded an alarm. We rushed to look into the room from the window on the other side of the hostel and saw him hanging. Then, I climbed onto the pipe to get into the room via the window, unlatched the door and called let in the others. We brought him down,” narrated one of the horror-stricken mates.
Briefing on the matter, inspector J. Jadeja, Gujarat University Police Station informed that a criminal case has been registered and investigation is underway. “It is too early to comment on the possible cause. We have seized the phone and sent it to the forensics to retrieve lost data,” he replied when asked to summarise the reason behind the suicide.
