A day after Central University of Gujarat (CUG) punished three students accused of ragging a junior student, some students from the North East have raised questions over the process and nature of the inquiry into the incident. NE students reached out to Vice Chancellor of CUG, Rama Shanker Dubey, and Lok Sabha MP from Manipur Rajkumar Ranjan Singh calling the inquiry a “biased” one.
The NE students alleged in the letter, “Quite strangely, the complaints by Mr Zhimomi of being subjected to racial remarks towards our community, which is a violation of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act 1989) and verbal racial abuse by Mr Sunny Kumar have been completely ignored.”
The students said that in past too there had been cases of sexual harassment and racial discrimination against North East students at CUG, compliant of which was given to registrar’s office.
Students also raised questions over the validity of the punishment as the varsity ‘re-constituted’ its anti-ragging committee only on February 23, a day after its “committee” conducted the preliminary probe and announced punishment to three students of Masters and PhD courses. Officials said that a separate committee conducted the preliminary probe as three members’ terms in the anti-ragging committee had ended and there was no new appointment.
First year UG student Sunny Kumar, the victim and a student of German Studies, alleged that three students barged into his hostel room at 1.30 am when he was asleep and hit him with sharp objects on the head, face and stomach.
