Residents of South Vasna are faced with a three-pronged menace: air pollution, pounding noise the entire day and danger posed by heavy machinery plying around a residential pocket. This is all courtesy the illegal sand mining from the adjoining Sabarmati riverbed and then, dumping in the adjoining AMC plot. JCB and dumpers frequent the area 24×7, raising dust levels while illegally transporting sand.
The residents have written to the AMC and pointed out that the plot owned by AMC is being used for illegal activities.
There are 13 residential societies in and around the vicinity. According to Jayantilal Makwana, a resident of Rajyash Reeva: “Illegal trade of sand, which involves illegal mining and dumping in the AMC plot, just behind our society, has gradually grown over the years. At present, we are contemplating moving out because it hard to live here. Senior citizens can’t sleep and students can’t prepare for their examinations at night. Ironically, the plot from where the illegal activities are carried out is AMC-owned.”
Nishit Shah, a resident of Rajyash Rivanta, added: “Fed up with the worsening situation, we wrote a joint letter on in January this year addressed to the Vasna police station, AMC Chief and Traffic Division authorities. Corporator Himanshu Wala has offered support. We want immediate action in this regard. It has become difficult to stay here.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Sparsh Aron resident Nirav Shah narrated how the noise of heavy machinery is too much to bear. “It does not feel like living in a residential area. The activity is affecting the lives of at least 10,000 residents.”
Gelabhai Desai, a resident of Rajyash Rains, said, “Our society falls in the Vasna ward but the Assembly constituency comes under Danilimda whose MLA Shailesh Parmar doesn’t take interest in our problems. We tried to take on the encroachers but they use foul language and create nuisance. It’s high time someone takes action in this matter.”
Some of the other affected societies include Rajyash Riveria, Silver Flora, Sparsh Arista, Saransh Earth, Swaminarayan Park 1, 2, 3, 4.
When asked to comment on the matter, Deputy Municipal Commissioner I.K. Patel acknowledged being in receipt of the complaint letter. “A team has been formed and is inspecting the matter. Any illegal activity will be stopped,” he added.
