Two persons – one each from Gandhinagar and Kheda – were apprehended by the Chaklasi police in Kheda district in connection with allegedly defamatory posts on social media about a woman. According to the woman’s complaint, her photograph was circulated on social media with posts about a concocted ‘honeytrap’ case involving multiple IPS officers of Gujarat Police.
The woman, a resident of Chaklasi, lodged an FIR on February 15 against five persons under IPC Section 469 (forgery to harm reputation), 500, 502 (defamation) and 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
The two persons arrested are a journalist with a Gandhinagar-based weekly and a social media video blogger. The three other persons booked are social media users who posted the complainant’s pictures with the story, with which she had no connection.
The woman in her FIR said her picture was taken from her social media account without her permission and was misused with the report or post about the alleged incident. Some of the posts went viral, causing her disrepute. She said she was not involved in any such incident but her name was dragged in.
The posts and certain media reports had claimed that five IPS officers of the Gujarat cadre had got in touch with a woman during horse riding lessons at Gujarat Police Academy (GPA), developed close ties with them and later extorted hefty sums from them. After the reports, state police constituted an inquiry headed by an SP-level officer.
The woman whose pictures were used in these reports was also called and questioned in connection with the incident. The committee gave a clean chit to the officers in December last year.
