Weeks after the deadly attack on Peshawar’s police line, at least 5 terrorists and 4 others, including rangers and police officers, were killed during a four-hour operation by law enforcement in Karachi, Pakistan.
Officials revealed that of the 5 extremists, 3 of them committed suicide by blowing themselves up and 2 were killed by gunfire on Friday. Officials have announced that 18 people were hurt in the latest attack on police officers as terrorism grips the country. The city’s police chief’s five-story office was cleared by the LEAs following the lengthy operation.
The incident drew sharp rebukes from senior government figures, but Defence Minister Khawaja Asif insisted that “condemnations are not enough” and that extremists must face stern action. The assault started at 7:10 pm, and police and Rangers personnel gradually evacuated the five-story structure before sweeping the whole office by 10:46 pm.
Following the violent attack on the Karachi Police Office (KPO) – the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Office, Rangers and police forces have launched a coordinated operation against the terrorists, according to media reports.
The quick response force (QRF) of the paramilitary troops surrounded the KPO building and took up positions, according to the Rangers spokesperson. Rangers and police launched an operation to rid the KPO of militants. The spokesperson claimed that the operation was carried out since it was rumoured that eight to ten terrorists were present in the office of the Karachi police chief.
An anonymous police officer informed that the assailants entered the office while wearing police uniforms, a similar strategy to the Peshawar mosque suicide attack that left more than 80 people dead. Seven individuals, including Rangers police officers, have been hurt. “The police have said that the terrorists threw a grenade after parking the vehicle, and used that as a cover for entering the building,” he revealed.
Security is on high alert in the federal capital, and all officers have been told to remain in their specific regions, according to a statement from Islamabad IG Akbar Nasir Khan. He said that authorities have been told to keep all significant buildings and the Red Zone on high alert. “Checking of entry and exit ways and inside the city has been increased,” he said.
