Police constable Sagarkumar Devayat of Morbi Town Police had never been accused of dereliction of duty. Perhaps, his habit of constantly chewing on paan, too went unnoticed. However, vigilant officials monitoring the police bandobast during the G-20 meet in Dhordo (Bhuj), spotted the constable in the line-up on February 8. Devayat was reprimanded and shunted.
This was the first three-day (Feb 7 to Feb 10) Tourism Working Group Meeting under India’s G-20 Presidency.
The letter sent to DSP Bhuj Division by SP, Kutch (West) Saurabh Singh informed that Devayat stood shunted to Morbi for his “consumption of tobacco on duty.”
“Moreover, consumption of tobacco and spitting is not allowed on duty. We have got a replacement for Devayat,” a senior police official stated. Four years ago, action was taken against six cops who weer carrying tobacco while being part of a bandobast for the CM, he added.
Over 100 delegates from G-20 countries took part in the three-day event which, among others, discussed key issues like the promotion of green tourism, harnessing digitalization and empowering youths with skills.
The senior police official explained that special care is being taken to ensure a “India Shining” image and having a law enforcer chew and spit paan would surely have dented the prospects.
