Rescue teams were still searching for survivors buried in the rubble of thousands of buildings destroyed in Turkey and Syria by massive earthquakes and aftershocks that killed over 15,000 people. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited a “tent city” in Kahramanmaras, where people are living, amid calls for the Turkish government to send more aid to the disaster zone. He admitted to shortfalls in Turkey’s disaster response early on and no one would be “left in the streets.”
Tens of thousands of aid workers have been deployed in the earthquake zone, and search and rescue teams from more than a dozen countries have joined them. However, because the devastation is so widespread, many people are still waiting for assistance and hope.
Because of the magnitude of the damage and the lack of assistance reaching certain areas, survivors said they felt alone in responding to the disaster.
