Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on a two-day visit to Gujarat. In Ahmedabad, the former US Secretary of State is paying a visit on the occasion of the completion of the 50th year of the Self-Empowered Women’s Association (SEWA). She participates in programmes of SEWA founded by a social worker and Gandhian Ela Bhatt.
Clinton pays tribute to Bhatt, who died at 89 in November last year, and interacts with SEWA members at its office in Ahmedabad.
Addressing members of Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), Clinton said “SEWA members’ story is about inspiration, determination and courage and they have overcome so many obstacles, and broken through so many barriers, which leads to inspiring them to more than 2 million women around the globe.” Adding she said, more than 2 million women are encouraged, and determined as they all work with the SEWA group.”
“But now you face an additional challenge, the challenge that climate change presents of heat,” Clinton said, adding She said that “Whether you’re in construction, or you are in waste recycling, or you are in plastic, or you are a street vendor, or you are a farmer, whatever you are, your challenge to make an income to support yourselves and work throughout the days of overwhelming heat will be the next big problem that SEWA will help you try to resolve.”
She also announced the first-of-its-kind climate resilience fund, which will work for global resilience, and climate. She said heat caused by climate change poses an additional challenge to women workers in informal sectors and a global ‘Climate Resilience Fund’ will help tackle this challenge.
Former Secretary Of State on February 6th will visit Surendranagar to visit salt farmers and will visit Kuda desert.
