In an unusual finding, a tunnel-like structure was discovered at the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said that the tunnel connects the Legislative Assembly to Red Fort. He added that the British used the tunnel to move freedom fighters without provoking reprisal.
Goel further said that when he became an MLA in 1993, there was hearsay about a tunnel present here that goes till Red Fort and he tried to search for its history. But there was no clarity over it.
He added that now they have got the mouth of the tunnel but they are not digging it further as all the paths of the tunnel have been destroyed due to metro projects and sewer installations.
Goel further explained that the Delhi Assembly, which was used as the Central Legislative Assembly after India’s capital was shifted from Kolkata to Delhi in 1912, was converted into a court in 1926. The British used this tunnel to transport freedom fighters to the court, said the Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker.
He also said that considering the historical significance of the Delhi Legislative Assembly’s association with the country’s independence, the gallows room will most probably be opened for tourists by the next independence day, and work has already commenced on the project.
