At least 178,000 users of the popular crime-reporting Citizen App received a push message revealing the precise location of an alleged break-in at the house of singer-songwriter Billie Eilish.
Numerous recipients of the push notification were alerted that police in Los Angeles were responding to a 911 call regarding an attempted burglary at a particular residence in the city’s Highland Park neighbourhood.
Later, the alert was updated to indicate that the house belonged to music artist Billie Eilish, according to the police. According to the report published late on Friday, the notification, which included the precise address of the property, was emailed to 178,000 people and viewed by around 78,000 of them.
Due to privacy concerns, Billie Eilish’s childhood house in Highland Park is obscured on Google Maps. Later, the app moved the reported incident’s address to a cross-street rather than the precise address.
Vigilante was the initial name of the Citizen app. The app’s goal is to persuade users to post recordings and pictures of alleged crimes and nearby police activity. Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, terminated the accounts of numerous well-known journalists in December of last year after they covered his “precise real-time location,” or “Doxxing,” on the microblogging site.
The act of disclosing someone’s personal information online is known as doxing. It is a type of online harassment when someone’s real name, address, employer, or other identifying information is made available to the public. Additionally, Musk disabled the Twitter account that followed the path of his private plane.
