Did you know Chennai is home to some of the cleanest beaches? Elliott’s, Thiruvanmiyur, and Kovalam are among the nation’s cleanest beaches, according to a professional survey.
According to the most recent sources, a study done by scientists at the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), a national lab that monitors coastal pollution, rated city beaches as “extremely clean” under the clean coast index evaluated by the amount of litter collected.
According to reports, the study was carried out between 2019 and 2021 on 33 beaches and 75 beaches nationwide in 2022, including the three beaches in the city. Plastics, particularly single-use plastics, continue to make up the majority of the trash found on beaches, despite the fact that their overall presence on the sands has decreased from 60% in 2019 and 2021 to 40% in 2022.
Furthermore, the main causes of pollution on the beaches are fishing and tourism. Researchers from NCCR also noted that regular clean-up campaigns and waste collection are responsible for the city beaches’ relative cleanliness.
According to NCCR scientist Pravakar Mishra, Thiruvanmiyur beach is cleaned and maintained every day by a volunteer organisation organised by locals. As a result, Thiruvanmiyur has less litter by weight than the island beaches of Andaman and Lakshadweep.
Additionally, he stated that the cleanliness of Elliot’s Beach has improved due to better cleaning efforts and that the reduction in plastic waste on beaches is due to the ban on single-use plastics and ongoing awareness initiatives.
