The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, was approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday with the goal of making India a hub for the production of this sustainable energy source.
“The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission,” Union Minister Anurag Thakur said. A total of Rs 19,744 crore would be spent initially on the mission, comprising Rs 17,490 crore for the SIGHT programme, Rs 1,466 crore for pilot projects, Rs 400 crore for R&D, and Rs 388 crore for other mission-related elements.
The instructions for implementing the plan will be developed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The mission is to support the growth of a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) annually with an accompanying addition of around 125 GW of renewable energy capacity in the nation by 2030.
By 2030, it calls for an investment of more than Rs 8 lakh crore and the creation of more than 6 lakh jobs. By 2030, it will also reduce fossil fuel imports by more than Rs 1 lakh crore and reduce yearly greenhouse gas emissions by almost 50 MMT.
Additionally, the Mission will assist the Strategic Hydrogen Innovation Cooperation (SHIP), a public-private partnership structure for research and development. The objectives, deadlines, and magnitude of R&D initiatives shall be appropriate for creating globally competitive technology. Additionally, a coordinated skill-development programme will be implemented.
To ensure the Mission’s goals are successfully attained, all relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and institutions of the centre and state governments will take targeted and coordinated action. He said that the overall management and execution of the Mission will fall under the purview of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
