Jack Ryan has returned with a fresh objective. Specifically, to avert a World War. The third season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan’s writers have deftly selected a plot that connects with the main issue facing the globe today.
It touches on the shaky politics of Eastern Europe as well as the dynamics of Russia-NATO ties and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although Jack Ryan has his share of heroic moments, there are many more heroes in this novel whose goals are more important to the overall plot than Jack Ryan’s as a CIA analyst.
Ryan had significant pals in the early seasons as well, but he never gave the impression that he was merely participating in their antics. However, there have been times this season when Ryan has been absolutely helpless; without the crucial support from these allies, his objective would have been all but impossible.
John Krasinski portrays the role with ease and spontaneity, just like in previous seasons. Before landing in Moscow, where a scheme to restore the former Soviet Union is being developed, the tale passes through various capital cities in Eastern Europe. This conspiracy is being cooked up by a former member of the Red Army who has the backing of an old friend and a young, aspirational politician who wants to take over.
The climax in season three is particularly dragged out, compared to the previous seasons’ climaxes, which went all the way to the edge and back. Every time you believe it is finally finished, it advances. Of course, there are times when the drama in the style of Bollywood wins out over reality. Such scenes undermine the narrative.
In spite of these plot problems, Jack Ryan Season 3 is still worth watching if you’re seeking for an espionage thriller with modern global politics thrown in.
