In his first Covid-oriented speech since Beijing abruptly lifted strict containment measures last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged officials to take action to preserve lives on Monday.
China had been mostly immune to the virus throughout the majority of the pandemic, but after regulations that crippled the economy were suddenly loosened, the country is currently seeing the largest increase in covid cases worldwide.
According to studies, one million people could pass away in the coming months. While emergency medical facilities are overburdened by an inflow of elderly patients who lack the recommended vaccinations, many others in the public are struggling with medication shortages.
“At present, Covid-19 prevention and control in China are facing a new situation and new tasks,” Xi said in a directive. “We should launch the patriotic health campaign in a more targeted way… fortify a community line of defence for epidemic prevention and control, and effectively protect people’s lives, safety and health.”
