Sources claimed on Sunday that Satyendar Jain, a Delhi minister who has been detained since June while awaiting trial in a money laundering case, would not be permitted visits for 15 days and that “facilities” like a table and chair in his cell will be taken away.
A committee appointed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, a representative of the BJP-led government at the centre, recommended the action in response to disclosures of CCTV tapes showing Mr Jain enjoying massages and receiving visits inside his jail cell, according to sources.
The committee also claimed to have discovered “collusion” between Satyendar Jain and Sandeep Goel, the former prison head, and suggested departmental action be taken against Mr Goel for giving the minister “VIP treatment.”
At the height of his party’s campaign against the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party leader had been singled out in a series of video leaks in the days leading up to the crucial Gujarat state elections as well as the high-stakes municipal elections in Delhi. His team claimed that the home-cooked meals and massages were physiotherapy and that they had received approval from doctors and the courts. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, claimed that the video leaks were only intended to undermine his party’s election chances.
Weeks after the AAP trounced the BJP in the municipal elections, but fell short of its expectations in Gujarat, the punishment for Mr Jain is 15 days.
The minister, who was detained by the Enforcement Directorate, which looks into financial crimes and also answers to the BJP-led government at the centre, is charged with using four firms that are purportedly connected to him to launder money.
