Twitter CEO Elon Musk has launched a poll on the microblogging website, asking millions of users if they think he should stand down as CEO after implementing a flurry of policy changes over the past few days.
“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” Musk asked. “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. My apologies. Won’t happen again,” he stated in a follow-up tweet.
This poll was released following Twitter’s announcement on Sunday that it would block accounts that promoted other accounts on certain social media networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Mastodon. Additionally, Twitter stated that cross-posting content from any social media platform is still permitted. Posting usernames or links to social networking sites that are not on the list above is also not against the rules.
“We recognise that many of our users are active on other social media platforms. However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter,” Twitter Support tweeted.
At the same time that Musk has come under fire for significant policy changes on the platform, Twitter has changed its regulations. Elon Musk’s decision to ban journalists from Twitter on Friday was criticised as setting a dangerous precedent by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
On a site that claims to be a place for free speech, he added, media voices shouldn’t be stifled. At a time when journalists around the world are dealing with censorship, physical threats, and even worse, the UN spokesperson noted that this action sets a terrible precedent. A number of journalists had their accounts suspended on Thursday by Elon Musk’s Twitter, which displayed “account suspended” warnings for them. The accounts were restored following a significant protest from the public.
