Former deputy Prime Minister and BJP patriarch LK Advani’s three-decade bond as a voter in the Jamalpur-Khadia constituency has come to an end. He will not vote in Ahmedabad in the upcoming Gujarat election. Advani’s official address on the electoral rolls is now shown as Atal Adarsh Vidyalaya, New Delhi.
Earlier, Advani was registered as a voter from the BJP’s old office at Pandit Deendayal Bhavan, JP Chowk, and cast his vote at Shahpur Hindi High School in Khanpur. Advani last voted in a Lok Sabha election in May 2019 in Ahmedabad. In the 1991 Lok Sabha poll, Advani had contested from New Delhi and Gandhinagar and had won with a handsome margin.
In 1991, Advani fought for the first time in a Lok Sabha poll from two seats. In New Delhi, he faced stiff competition from the Congress candidate and Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna. He nonetheless beat Khanna by a margin of only 1,589 votes. In Gandhinagar though, Advani won by a mammoth margin of 1.25 lakh votes.
Later, Advani resigned from the New Delhi constituency and then Khanna won the New Delhi by-election.
In 1998, Advani won from Gandhinagar and since then represented the constituency till 2019 when the national BJP president Amit Shah was fielded from Gandhinagar.
