The Gujarat High Court rejected a PIL submitted by Surat activist Sanjeev Ezava seeking a magisterial inquiry by disbanding the existing special investigation team (SIT) into the Morbi suspension bridge collapse incident. The bridge collapsed on October 30 claiming 135 lives.
The PIL sought to involve the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and also sought compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the victims.
While hearing the petition, the bench of Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh Shastri said that multiplication of litigation on the issue is not warranted. The court has already taken cognizance of the issue on October 31. The High Court asked the litigant to assist the court in the suo motu PIL on the issue.
The HC has asked the government to submit a status report by November 14. It also sought a report from the State Human Rights Commission. One of the relatives of the victims of the tragedy has also filed a writ petition in the apex court for a CBI probe.
