Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram visited Ahmedabad on Tuesday to campaign for his party before Gujarat elections. He raised several questions on the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy which claimed 135 lives.
Chidambaram said, “As per my knowledge nobody has apologised or resigned for such a big tragedy. This is due to the BJP’s arrogance. If such a thing would have happened in a foreign country, there would have been immediate resignations. They have not apologised as the government here thinks they will easily win the coming elections and they need not be accountable for the incident.”On October 30, a suspension bridge on the Machchuu river in Gujarat’s Morbi district collapsed, claiming 135 lives.
“What is the need of forming an SIT when the culprits are out there. The Oreva company did not have a fitness certificate, they did not take permission to open the bridge, they didn’t even renovate the bridge as they had promised…government should have directly filed the chargesheet and given their judgement in maximum 30 days. Why this delay?” adds Chidambaram.
“No one has resigned taking responsibility. Morbi bridge collapse has brought shame to the fair name of Gujarat,” he said, taking on the BJP in prime minister Narendra Modi’s home state, where an election is due next month.
The Gujarat Assembly polls will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on December 8.
