A day after the Morbi bridge tragedy, which claimed 134 lives and spurred concerns about public safety in Gujarat, authorities introduced new safety measures in ferry services in Dwarka. The new safety requirements for boat services between Okha and Bet Dwarka arose as the number of tourists increased. The people are being given life jackets. Gujarat Maritime Board and Dwarka province officials are paying special attention to people’s safety.
Partha Talsania, SDM, Gujarat Maritime Board & Dwarka province officials said that, “there are huge gatherings of tourists due to festivals. We’re sending people on the jetty according to its capacity, life jackets are provided to all. Special attention is being paid to the safety of people.”
In the aftermath of the Morbi bridge collapse, a video apparently from Bet Dwarka, Gujarat, has gone viral. In the footage, boats travelling from Okha boat pool to Bet Dwarka are shown carrying far more passengers than their capacity.
Hundreds of passengers can be seen travelling on the small boat, emphasising the hazards of such overcrowding in the same state where the tragedy occurred on October 30. According to reports, the Morbi bridge collapse killed more than 140 people.
