Gujarati singer Aditya Gadhvi’s show in Toronto, Canada, had to be cancelled due to mismanagement and chaos, allegedly caused by overbooking of tickets. The show was scheduled last Saturday (October 8). Those who attended the event, organised by Ontario-based Maa Ambe Entertainment, said that people had queued up in biting cold (it was around 7 degrees Celsius in Toronto at the time of the show on October 8), and a fight broke out between the organisers and some people who were not allowed inside the venue.
The tickets were priced at 20 Canadian dollars and people alleged that those were sold for 50 Canadian dollars.
Every year post Navratri, Gujarati singers perform abroad during garba events to packed houses. In this case, there are allegations of around 2,000 extra passes being circulated. More than 500 people have filed complaints against the organisers and the chaos at the venue left some people injured. Eyewitnesses said bottles were hurled at Gadhvi as well.
Gadhvi, 28, is the son of famous folk singer Yogesh Gadhvi. One of the patrons who couldn’t enter the venue took to social media and posted, “It’s unfair to people who paid money, travelled from far, waited in cold and didn’t even get entry as the venue was overbooked. This is the sheer greed of the organisers and the singer.”
As the crowds demanded a refund of their ticket money, Gadhvi issued a statement on social media which he later deleted: “I’m coming to Canada for the first time. I consider you all as my family members. I wasn’t aware about the chaos taking place outside while I was singing here. We can discuss and come upon a solution. I want to keep coming to Canada to entertain you all.”
Gadhvi rose to fame after winning the ‘E-TV Lok Gayak Gujarat’ competition at the age of 18. In 2014, he was short-listed for an Oscar nomination.
