Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, who has a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) background, was sworn in as the next chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi-founded Gujarat Vidyapith, a deemed university in Ahmedabad. The university accepted the resignation of Ela Bhatt, the founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and renowned social activist.
Devvrat, associated with the farmers’ wing of the RSS, took over as Gujarat Governor in 2019 after serving as the governor of Himachal Pradesh. He’s also a promoter of natural farming.
It’s understood that Bhatt (90), a Gandhian, had written to varsity officials, asking them to relieve her owing to age-related issues. She will be relieved after a convocation on October 18, the day Gandhi founded the university in Ahmedabad in 1920, it is reported.
Even as the varsity pondered over a replacement, the UGC issued show cause notice as to why its status as a deemed university should not be withdrawn on account of financial irregularities.
Improper depiction of assets acquired from government grants is the other allegation.
