The National Medical Commission (NMC) on Monday, September 12, 2022 announced the schedule for the admissions to postgraduate medical courses.
The NMC has also announced that the counselling session for the first round of admissions to all-India quota seats will be held from September 15 to 27. Students, who find their names on the merit list for all-India quota seats will have to confirm their admission before October 4.
A round of counselling sessions will also be conducted at deemed and central universities and colleges.
For the state quota seats, the first round of admissions will be conducted from September 25 to October 4. Students on the merit list for all-India quota seats have to confirm their admissions by October 8, 2022.
The second round of admissions for all-India quota seats will be held from October from 10 to 18 and for state quota seats will be held from October 16 to 26, 2022.
Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under Government of India had called off the registration process that was supposed to begin from September 1 onwards and had requested NMC to carry out college inspections until September 15.
The NMC circular dated September 8 had stated, “All medical colleges, where recognition and continuation are due, it has been decided to give recognition and continuation of recognition on the basis of a sworn affidavit for the 2022-23 academic years.”
The circular also claimed that- “However, random surprise inspections may be carried out on the basis of track record of the medical colleges. Decisions will be taken on the basis of these inspection reports.”
However, the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision to grant recognition to medical institutes solely on the basis of an affidavit has irked many undergraduate and postgraduate aspirants, who have eagerly been awaiting the admissions to begin.
All medical colleges need to get their recognition updated by NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) before taking new students. However, this year, MARB has decided to offer recognition (or continuation of recognition) on the basis of a sworn affidavit submitted by the institute.
With this move, parents have exclaimed that this declaration would eventually affect students even after securing a seat.
“Such blanket recognition is a cause for concern as there were instances where institutes were not allowed to participate in the admissions after their inspection report highlighted default. Without a physical inspection, any college can take part in the counselling,” a parent of a PG medical aspirant, said.
Currently, there is one central university; eighteen state universities; two deemed universities; and nine private universities in Gujarat.
