AdaniConneX Private Limited, a joint venture firm of Adani Enterprises with United States-based EdgeConneX is scheduled to build 1,000 megawatt data centres almost double the current capacity of the total industry over a period of 10 years.
Meanwhile, Senior Vice President and Head of Data Centre Business, AdaniConneX, Sanjay Bhutani asserted, “The first seven data centres of the company will come up in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune.”
He furthered while speaking about the details of the project, “We are building 1,000 megawatt (1-GW) data centres. Today, the industry stands around 550 MW. Building a 1,000 megawatt data centre in the next one decade is something which is our business plan.”
According to the Indian analytical company providing ratings, research, risks and policy advisory services, the Credit Rating Information Services of India (CRISIL) – “Data centre capacity in India is expected to double to about 1,700-1,800 megawatt by FY-2025 from 870-MW in the financial year 2022, powered by the combination of data boom, digital adoption and local data storage mandates.
Adding further, Bhutani justified that six of the cities will get their first seven data centres with a total capacity of 450-MW over the next three years, while 550-MW is going to be in tier-2 and 3 towns.
“Undersea cable is very important for the data centre business and Mumbai and Chennai are the only two locations in India, which are connected to this network. We are unlocking that by bringing in a cable in the southern part of the country, eastern part of the country and central part of the country,” Bhutani claimed.

The digital infrastructure status to data centres and seven states has already been settled by the government with a structured data centre policy, helping the company to be more efficient and agile.
“Government has also come out with a lot of policies, which are actually helping the nation to grow at a faster pace, creating a common infrastructure, which can be used by all of us. Let’s not create data centres individually,” Bhutani asserted.
He insisted on the assistance of other countries to make India a global digital hub for a digital economy. Earlier in February 2021, Adani Enterprises had formed a 50-50 joint venture with US-based EdgeConneX to set up data centres in India.
The Joint Venture had also announced plans to set up data centres in cities like Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad. Adani Group had submitted an application to the Uttar Pradesh government to build a data centre in sector-80 of Noida with an investment of INR 2,500 crore.
