Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra made India proud by securing the top notch to claim his first ever Diamond League title in Lausanne, Switzerland, after giving his best score of 89.08m during the qualification event.
Neeraj has qualified for the Diamond League final, which will be held on September 7-8 in Zurich, Switzerland, which also qualified him for the upcoming World Athletics Championships to be held in Budapest in the month of August, 2023, having a minimum qualifying score of 85.20m.
The 24-year-old javelin thrower Chopra had pulled himself out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games because of a minor injury that he had picked up at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon last month.
During the game, none of the competitors came close to emulating his throw, with Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic placed second with a best attempt of 85.88m and Curtis Thompson of the United States completed third at the podium.
The Athletics Federation of India (@afiindia) on August 26, 2022 tweeted, “NeerajChopra’s top finish with 89.08m at Lausanne Diamond League. He is back and back with a bang!”
Earlier this year, Chopra had thrown a personal best of 89.94m and had finished second in the Stockholm Diamond League.
Notably, only the top six scorers at the end of the Diamond League advance to the final.
Cheering Neeraj Chopra from the stands at Diamond League Meet in Lausanne was another Olympic star from India, the Beijing gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra, who posted a picture with Neeraj just after the event and tweeted, “Wonderful to watch @Neeraj_chopra1 in action in Lausanne. Congratulations!”
The Lausanne Diamond League was the last qualification event for the men’s javelin throwers looking to enter the grand finale.
