PM Modi declares August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

| Updated: August 14, 2021 18:08

PM Modi on Saturday said that August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people for independence.

The partition era in 1947 is known as one of the darkest periods in the history of India as the division had displaced hundreds of thousands of Hindus and Muslims. It was accompanied by religious rights and had also resulted in mass murders, rapes, loots and other horrifying memories. He added that the day will remind us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness and social harmony.

He took to Twitter stating that Partitions’ pain can never be forgotten as millions of Indians were displaced while many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. Hence, in memory of the sacrifices and struggles of our people, August 14 will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

PM Modi’s announcement comes on Pakistan’s Independence Day and a day before India celebrates its 74 years of freedom.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has welcomed PM Modi’s decision to observe August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

“The wound of the partition of the country and the grief of losing loved ones cannot be described in words. I am sure that Partition Horrors Remembrance Day will strengthen peace, love, and unity by eliminating the ill-will of discrimination and malice from society,” read Amit Shah’s tweet in Hindi.
