The civic authorities will plant 22 lakh trees in Ahmedabad and surrounding areas over the next two months, at a cost of approximately Rs 36 crore.
According to sources, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) expenditure to plant 21 lakh trees is Rs 20 crore. While the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) plans to plant 1 lakh trees at a cost of Rs 16 crore.
AUDA’s expenditure for planting 1 lakh trees is up to 20 times that of AMC’s because it has contracted the plantation job to private firms, which includes the installation of tree guards and two-year maintenance.
Both the civic authorities will begin their plantation drives on July 24 and finish them by September 30.
As per AUDA sources, two tenders for the planting of one lakh trees have been approved. In another tender, 25,000 trees will be planted alongside a 75-km stretch of SP Ring Road and service roads at a cost of Rs 10 crore. 75,000 trees will be planted in 75 villages under AUDA jurisdiction.
Jignesh Patel, director of the AMC garden department, stated that 20 urban forests totalling 21 lakh trees will be developed across the city.
