In India, police officers have gained a bad rap, especially because of increasing cases of violence and police brutality. However, one man is living proof that some policemen are willing to do whatever they can to make the world a better place. Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Haresh Jebaliya of Sarthana police station in Surat, who came from a humble background, is one such person. He has taken the responsibility to provide quality education to 100 kids. He had decided that when he gets 1 lakh followers on Instagram, he would do this for the children who could not afford basic education.
Born in a family of farmers, Jebaliya could not afford coaching classes or extra tuition. He did his Engineering and passed PSI and other exams, purely through hard work. Having been in this situation, Jebaliya understands the difficulties that children in rural areas and poor families have to face. This is why he decided to lend a helping hand and take responsibility for the education of 100 kids from a government school in Daida village of Dhari in Amreli.
Jebaliya says he decided to be in charge of 100 kids’ education when he reached 1 lakh followers on Instagram. Many people take such pledges but very few can actually succeed in their ventures. However, this inspector went to the principal of the school and took charge of 100 students. Even the principal was surprised that a police officer took charge of the children, instead of a social worker.
Talking about gathering funds for the cause, Jebaliya says that many of his friends and followers came forward to help. He declared that he would contribute 10% of his salary and his friends volunteered to pitch in. Today Jebaliya not only funds the kids’ education but also monitors their progress through a team of volunteers. This team is made up of many teachers who visit the village every 2-3 months to make sure that the children are doing well. Those who are showing good potential are encouraged to do better and help is provided to weaker students. This way the team can prepare these students for higher studies and also for a brighter future.
