West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has been nominated for the position of Vice President of India by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), said BJP national president J P Nadda on Saturday.
M Venkaiah Naidu’s term as Vice President ends on August 10. Vice President elections are scheduled for August 6, with nominations due by July 19.
Since taking office as governor of West Bengal in July 2019, Dhankhar has frequently clashed with the state’s Mamata Banerjee-led government over a variety of issues.
The office of the Vice President is unique to India, which operates under a parliamentary system, and has no exact counterpart in other democratic countries, including the Commonwealth.
