Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of Mohammad Sayeed, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, identified Yasin Malik, the JKLF chief, among three others, as her abductors.
Sayeed was kidnapped on 8 December 1989 near Lal Ded Memorial Women’s Hospital at gunpoint. Where a 23-year-old Rubaiya interned. She was released five days later, on 13 December 1989, in exchange for five imprisoned terrorists.
She appeared before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Friday. It marks the first appearance for Sayeed in connection with the case before the court since CBI took over the case in 1990.
Court Proceedings:
Sayeed identified Yasin Malik as her abductor, who was present through video conferencing in court.
She told the judges, “This is the person, and his name is Yasin Malik. He was the man who threatened me that he will drag me out of the minibus if I refused to follow their diktat.”
Further, Sayeed also identified Malik through photographs exhibited in the court.
Monica Kohli, a CBI lawyer, said Sayeed identifies Malik among three others. The court has fixed 23 August as the upcoming hearing date.
Recently Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment among ten others accused in a terror funding case. The other CBI’s charges include Ali Mohammed Mir, Mohammed Zaman Mir, Iqbal Ahmad Gandroo, Javed Ahmad Mir, Mohammed Rafiq Pahloo, Manzoor Ahmed Sofi, Wajahat Bashir, Mehraj-ud-Din Sheikh and Showkat Ahmad Bakshi.
Rubaiya Sayeed has stayed out of the media attention after her release from her abductors. She is the sister of Mehbooba Mufti, an active politician who has served as a Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
