A tribal worker shared his spine-chilling experience with police brutality in Ahmedabad. Ranjit Jadhav, a 12th-grade pass-out, alleged that Ahmedabad Police beat him and his colleagues like animals on finding pomegranate scissors with their luggage.
Currently, Jadhav and others are undergoing treatment at Ahwa Hospital in Dang. He said he goes to Banaskantha and Kutch before monsoon as a daily wage labourer in pomegranate cultivation as he does not earn enough from farming.
He also takes young boys from his village to work as daily wage labourers. Moreover, he earns 12 to 15 thousand rupees a month and returns at the start of the monsoon to start cultivating at his small farm.
Jadhav narrated his tale and said, “As monsoon started, we planned to return home. We reached Ahmedabad on July 7 at the Geetamandir Bus Stand. As we waited for the bus for Dang, we felt hungry and went to get some food.”
Ranjit continued, “The security asked to check our bags as we returned. He saw that we had clothes and pomegranate scissors.” While they waited for the bus, a man in a civil dress with an identity card on his neck came and started beating him.
Jadhav described the incident and said, “I kept asking the reason for the beating. But, instead of saying something, he pushed me and took me to the Geetamandir Police Station.” Later, Jadhav alleged that the police called all his eight colleagues and stripped and beat them.
Ranjit claimed, “They beat us like animals, and we kept shouting for help. We also showed them our Aadhar cards. Even then, they did not listen.”
According to Ranjit, one of his comrades called an acquaintance who showed them the evidence, and the cops released them. But, they threatened the wage labourers to shut their mouths about the incident.
Jadhav mentioned, “The police beat us so badly that we could not talk without treatment. After the incident, we are scared to go back to Ahmedabad. I might quit my job.”
However, it is surprising that Jadhav’s case is not the first case of Police Brutality against the Adivasi Tribes.
