As per the data released by the Indian Meteorological Department on Monday, the country faces a 5 percent shortage of seasonal rainfall so far. Gujarat, second-worst after Manipur which has reported a 57 percent rain shortage on August 9, is reeling under a major rain deficit of 44 percent.
As per the data, Gujarat has received 252.5 mm rainfall from June 1 to August 9 against a normal average of 450.7 mm. Gujarat has received only three good rain spells in two months. The state received one rain spell in June and two spells in July instead of the traditional four spells.
At the breeding site in the Kutch region, lakhs of flamingos painted a pink canvas in August 2020 during this time of year however this year, the number of flamingos at Kuda has drastically reduced to just around 800 from a staggering 3.5 lakh. Less rainfall is the primary cause of this drastic decrease in the number of flamingos.
