With Maharashtra in its kitty, the BJP has consolidated its position in the south-western region. It is now eyeing the South, especially Telangana, where Sunday marked Day 2 of the BJP’s national executive meet. Hyderabad was all decked up for the mega event. The BJP’s foray into the Telangana Rashtra Samithi bastion was addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the concluding day and attended by top functionaries of the party from across the country.
The meeting passed several political and economic resolutions. The highlight, of course, was the massive public meeting at Parade Ground near Begumpet. PM Modi addressed the rally after the meeting concluded and referred to Hyderabad as “Bhagyanagar.”
While Amit Shah called for an end to dynast politics, in a veiled attack on the KCR and Jagan Reddy lineages, NaMo stressed on the need for party workers to undertake a “sneh yatra.” He boomed: “Sardar Patel gave us Ek Bharath here in Bhagyanagar. Today the whole team of BJP has assembled here under the leadership of JP Naddaji to make our country Shresht Bharath.”
Telangana, which goes to polls in late 2023, is being eyed by the BJP. The BJP sees an opportunity for a saffron surge in the southern state by bringing down the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government.
In 2019, the saffron party won four out of 17 seats in the state during the Lok Sabha elections. In 2020, at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election, the BJP came second to TRS after it grabbed 48 seats while TRS won 56. While the latter’s performance suffered a dip of 8 per cent, the BJP saw an upward swing of over 25 per cent in comparison to its last performance.
The BJP had asked members of the national executive to reach out to all 119 Assembly constituencies across Telangana for a “Sampark Abhiyan” before attending the national executive. Party leaders have been asked to spend two-three days across constituencies in Telangana. The exercise is aimed at assessing the mood and ground realities in the state, ahead of the 2023 Assembly polls.
Party local units were also instructed to identify and garner the support of community leaders and influencers.
Other than Telangana, the BJP’s national executive meet is also reported to have strategized for the upcoming state polls in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Tripura. The BJP’s performance in these crucial state elections will pave the way for its vision for 2024.
